Bishopton is a town in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland. It lies to the south of Dumbarton and east of Clydebank, on the north shore of the River Leven. The town’s name derives from Bishop land and town, a reference to its being once a bishopric.
The town grew up around the docks area which was developed as a result of trade with Ireland and the Americas. This resulted in the construction of large warehouses and wharfs, many of which are still in use today. The dock area also includes Bishopton Dock which is one of Glasgow’s largest commercial docks and which features an industrial area at its northern end. The dock extends over 3 km along the Leven from Bridge Street to Glasson Dock with four berths available for ships up to 380m LOA.
There is also a number of residential areas including Newmains, Friars Walk, Grove Terrace and High View Estate. A public park, called Killiecrankie Park, sits alongside the riverbank at Glasson Dock.
